Don Bosco Youth Centre as the name suggests is a Salesian Community of the Don Bosco Fathers and Brothers. Fr. Michael Mascarenhas spotted the piece of land on March 20, 1974. He later on purchased the piece of land from Mr. Mohammed Hussein Kochra on Good Friday, April 10, 1974. Fr. Michael Mascarenhas and Bro Lawrence D’Souza took possession of the House that very night. For the next two months, Mr. Ronnie Pereira, the contractor began modifications and repairs of the house. On June 1, 1974, Fr. Olivio Miranda was put in charge of the house. The first batch of student-clerics arrived on June 8, 1974.
This house has undergone much transformation from being the good old ‘Hotel Europa’ to the present day structure that is currently housing the students of Theology, Diocesan Catechetical Center and a Social, work Center. The campus, spread over a two acre plot of land in the heart of Pune boasts of a beautiful football ground, volleyball and basketball courts. Built as a very quaint and typically colonial type structure this monument surely catches the eye.
Don Bosco Youth Center is primarily a formation house meant for clerics studying Theology fin preparation for the priesthood. Being a formation house the main emphasis of the house is to groom young Salesians of the future. The Scholastics reside at Don Bosco Youth Center and go for their theological studies to Jnana Deepa Vidyapeeth. (J.D.V) college. Besides this, they involve themselves in various ministries at the weekends ranging from youth groups, to village works, social outreach projects, catechism classes, choirs and what have you.
The old building which forms the stately facade of the property was converted into the Salesian Catechetical Centre and was blessed by Rt. Rev. Valerian D’Souza, Bishoph of Poona, on March 20, 1979. Fr. Wilfred D’Souza was the first director. This has been another major service that the Salesians here provide to the diocese of Pune. Being the Diocesan Catechetical Centre, various animation programs focusing on all the sectors of society are regularly conducted here. These programs range from Parent Orientation, Teacher orientation, Retreats, providing catechetical notes, Youth animation programs and the list just goes on. Kindly check the Catechetical link for further details.
The latest buzz on the campus is a lively little Balwadi begun for Jr. K.G children of the slum dwellers of the neighbourhood and underprivileged kids. Frequented by around 30 children daily, this nursery imparts at no fee, quality education of the highest level to the children free. Taken up as a venture of the Salesians in collaboration with Abode fro Underprivileged Mankind (AUM) Foundation the most needy of society manage to get quality education. Besides this there are other projects like an evening study – cum - tuition class for the Std X. students of the neigbourhood.
